He Said: Time for Yourself

My good friend Leslie says to her readers "Take Time for Yourself" – noble advice but darn hard to follow. As a doctor I have been giving similar advice to patients for years, but have found that few people actually follow through. Recently I read an article in a magazine (not a technical medical journal) where a doctor expressed amazement and confusion that many of his patients did not follow his advice, even it if it was taking life saving medication. Studies of patients placed on medications that literally keep people alive have consistently found that over half of patients no longer take the medication as prescribed after 6 months. Not a very good track record. When you look at people who are advised to lose weight for medical reasons – 5% long term success, stop smoking? – a blazing 10-15%. So tell me Ms Leslie – how are you going to needle the psyche of your readers to stimulate them actually doing something healthy for them? Are you trying to tell me that the social networking pen of a female life experienced (sounds sooo much better than mid-life) writer is mightier than the god like stethoscope of a doctor like me? The medical world is awaiting your answer.
